MIA GALLERY, MAIN CAMPUS: Friday (8th November 2024), Diploma in Illustration students from Malaysian Institute of Art hosted their final-year Illustration Diploma showcase, titled, "A Sight To Behold". A sight to behold, holds a significant underlying statement that represents the student's projects by the means of the concepts and processes.
The concepts here share a similarity in theme, which is to promote appreciation towards subtle experiences and lessons in life that are so often overlooked over more significant matters. A sight to behold aims to raise awareness on the things we humans universally experience, but are seldom acknowledged.
To Kickoff the Showcase, A Speech from Ms Bibi Chew, MIA Head of Fine Art
The showcase opening ceremony started off with a speech from Ms Bibi Chew, congratulating the students on their hard work throughout this academic journey of theirs, and their hard work organising this showcase, through full independence in getting collaboration from external sponsors and media partners. Additionally, Ms Bibi also wished a fruitful and smooth journey for the graduating students.
Putting Concept And Processes Into Reality
Next, there was a tour around all 14 of the students works. Each illustration and each item displayed in the MIA gallery, has a significant story behind it. Let's go through some of the works presented by the students today.
1) Lee Kai Jie - Mimicking
This project is inspired by the concept of a chameleon's camoflage, and the pride that swells with the character once it found a loophole to exploit it.
2) Samantha Tang - Flora Friends
The aim of the project is to increase people's appreciation for the often ignored characteristics of flowers and plants in their daily lives.
3) Gan Ming Shen - Knowledge of the Servants
This is a short comic project based on the person experience Ming Shen has, owning cats. The objective is to let the people acknowledge the issues people face while keeping cats at home. Adding a fun perspective to the journey as well.
4) Nadia Ashmira - Jalan Cari Pasal, Nostalgia Zaman Sekolah
